HSE recently funded a research along with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and Investors in People to find out how stress between managers and employees can be reduced at workplace. A paper based on the research was presented at the annual conference of the Division of occupational Psychology of the British Psychological Society.

In the research, nearly 150 managers were asked to rate their managerial abilities and 500 employees were also asked to rate the managerial abilities of their immediate line managers. The researchers felt that the main cause for workplace stress was because of unresolved conflict between employees and managers. The researchers then divided the managers into two groups, where one group was given exact feedback of what the employees said along with relevant training to implement the feedback given to them. The other group, however, was kept in the dark about the feedback. Training given to the managers was largely focussed on the methods that the manager can use to prevent or reduce workplace conflict and the resultant stress.

According to the researchers, the group of managers who were given feedback and training approached their work with a difference. There was significant change in their management techniques post the feedback session. However, the managers who were not given any feedback went back being the same persons without any change in their behaviours. This caused the researchers to conclude that effective behaviour at workplace is possible through proper and adequate feedback and training.

Effective behaviour at workplace has been defined to include,

Maintaining integrity at workplace and managing emotions

Showing empathy towards workers or team members

Ability to manage conflict without causing stress

Ability to communicate and manage present and future work schedules

In order to help managers and employees reduce stress, Ms. Donaldson-Feilder and her colleagues are developing tools and questionnaires for managers and employees, which shall be made available shortly on the HSE website.
