Evaluating a Game

Auto Date Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Here’s an analogy. Let’s say you’re a field goal kicker in football and you can consistently hit a 45 yard field goal about 90% of the time. But you can only hit a 55 yard field goal about 50% of the time. And let’s say you’re betting with other kickers on these kicks. Some of them can hit a 45 yarder about 50% of the time, while the 55 yard kickers can hit theirs at a rate of 50% also. Which would be the more profitable game for you teo bet on? Well of course you’d want to play with the 50% 45 yarders as you have a 40% edge on them. They’re weaker than you and you can consistently beat them. Now let’s apply this to online poker. Let’s say you have a bunch of players at a poker online table, a full ring of 9. Three play as well as you do, one plays better, and the other four play worse. Who would you be willing to get in more pots with? The worse casino players of course, as it’s going to be their money you’re taking the most of. So when you’re evaluating a game, you need to keep in mind that several of the players will be weaker than you and that you should aim to take these players money rather than get trick or go heads up with players as good or better than you. If you pick on the worse players, you’re bound to make more money than you would be if you were only playing against the better players. It’s always better to keep the edge in your favor at the poker table.
